Project Description:
In 2021 ArchiWest achieved planning approval for the demolition of a 1970's bungalow situated on a generous plot in the village of Wedmore. Approval was granted for a bespoke two-storey house of superior construction and thermal efficiency, in materials sympathetic to the surrounding Listed buildings.
The new design reflects the simple rectangular plan of the former bungalow, with two gabled extensions that project out towards the rear, taking full advantage of the rural views. The building height was moderately increased to provide the additional living space contained within a ‘storey and a half’ design to minimise the visual impact and to sit more comfortably in the rural landscape and historic context of the nearby listed building.
The design is a significant departure from the 70’s bungalow and has contemporary elements that include large aluminium windows, lime rendered and clad walls. The north elevation has a natural stone facing with a recessed glazed entrance and overhanging canopy.
The project was completed in 2023.
